Steelers Will Be Contenders In 2024 Regardless Of Who Their Quarterback Is: 'Mike Tomlin, You Are An Absolute GOAT'
Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers made some significant offseason moves, shaking up their quarterback roster in a remarkable way. First, they signed former Super Bowl-winning quarterback Russell Wilson to a one-year deal worth the veteran minimum. Shortly after, they traded away their 2022 first-round draft pick quarterback, Kenny Pickett. A few days later, they successfully traded for former first-round pick Justin Fields. This offseason has truly transformed the Steelers' quarterback room.

These moves have generated a lot of excitement for the Steelers' upcoming season. However, many pundits and fans are debating who should be the starting quarterback for the Steelers in 2024. Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin has made it clear that, for now, the starter is Wilson. Fields will have the opportunity to compete all season, and some pundits believe Fields might eventually take over the starting job from Wilson.

Kay Adams shared her thoughts on her show, Up & Adams, on Friday. She discussed the Steelers' outlook for the 2024 season, expressing her surprise that every offseason, pundits continue to underestimate the Steelers and Tomlin. She debated who the Steelers' starter would be but ultimately concluded that it didn't matter.

“Whoever wins, it is an upgrade on what they had. Last season, Steelers quarterbacks combined for 13 touchdown passes to nine interceptions. Less than a touchdown pass per game is crazy in the '60s. Now it’s unheard of. They ranked in the bottom 10 pretty much across the board. I mean the fact that they still finished 10-7, [Mike] Tomlin, you are an absolute GOAT. Unbelievable.”

Adams pointed out that between Pickett, Mitch Trubisky, and Mason Rudolph, the Steelers quarterbacks combined for only 13 touchdown passes. It was an exceptionally poor season for the offense. Adams believes this underscores her point: whether it's Fields or Wilson starting, the Steelers' quarterback position will see a significant improvement in 2024.

“When are we going to stop doing this to Mike Tomlin? When are we going to get it? If it’s Russ, if it’s Justin, this team is going to be relevant. I think this is a playoff team to me. It might not be pretty, but it’s going to be better than averaging less than a touchdown per game combined.”

In his 17 seasons, the Steelers have never had a losing season under Tomlin. Despite their challenging 2024 schedule, Adams believes the Steelers will make the playoffs. The Steelers are in a tough AFC North division, known for its strong quarterback play. If Wilson starts in 2024, they will have a quarterback who threw for 26 touchdowns in 15 games in 2023.

Wilson appears to have the job locked up. He's confident in his abilities and is working harder than ever to prove that his last two seasons with the Denver Broncos were not his fault. In 2024, he will have the chance to play against the Broncos in a massive Week 2 revenge game.

Steelers Feel Very Good About Russell Wilson

The Steelers appear quite satisfied with their offseason moves. They believe Wilson is the quarterback for now, while Fields can sit back and learn from him. They have faith in Fields potentially being their future franchise quarterback, but they want to see him improve while learning from Wilson. As it stands today, the Steelers appear to have full confidence in Wilson helping them win games in 2024.

Currently, the Steelers have the worst odds in the AFC North to win their division and are projected to not have a winning season. However, Adams is not counting them out. She sees them as a surprise team in 2024 due to their upgrades on defense, offense, and special teams. With Wilson eager to prove those last two seasons with the Broncos were a fluke. The Steelers are in a good spot to put the league on notice in the 2024 season.
