Scottie Scheffler arrested, still makes PGA Championship tee time

According to Darlington, traffic outside the club was stopped "around 5 a.m. ET," and Scheffler was "trying to drive around the crash scene on a median."

"A police officer instructed Scheffler to stop, but Scheffler continued to drive about 10 to 20 yards toward the entrance," ESPN's Mark Schlabach wrote, as relayed by Darlington.

The 27-year-old two-time Masters champion was initially scheduled to tee off at 8:48 a.m. ET on Friday.

Darlington posted to social media at 6:35 a.m. ET that Scheffler had "been detained by police in handcuffs after a misunderstanding with traffic flow led to his attempt to drive past a police officer into Valhalla Golf Club."

"The police officer attempted to attach himself to Scheffler’s car, and Scheffler then stopped his vehicle at the entrance to Valhalla. The police officer then began to scream at Scheffler to get out of the car. When Scheffler exited the vehicle, the officer shoved Scheffler against the car and immediately placed him in handcuffs. He is now being detained in the back of a police car," Darlington wrote.

Schlabach wrote that Darlington was "standing at the entrance" when Scheffler was detained. Darlington said Scheffler turned to him and asked, "Can you help?" but an officer told the reporter to back away.

Per Schlabach's report, Scheffler faces charges of second-degree assault of a police officer (a felony), third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic. The latter three charges are misdemeanors, according to the report.

The report added that Scheffler (who finished tied for second at last year's PGA Championship) was released at 8:40 a.m. ET and departed for Valhalla. His new tee time is 10:08 a.m. ET.
